Hard to believe, but true: KUNe actually turned 10 years old this year! A special anniversary that we are incredibly proud of. Ten years full of ideas, design and technical innovations relating to Utility Sinks. A decade that has shaped our company and continuously developed our products. Reason enough to look back on this exciting journey together with KUNe founder Erwin Kunst at the end of the year and review the milestones of a Utility Sink decade.
I’m really proud of this anniversary. In the beginning, I actually only wanted to build a single washbasin for my garage. The fact that it has now become a flourishing company that reaches customers all over Europe is simply incredible. Knowing that our basins are now hanging in people’s houses or apartments from Norway to Cyprus fills me with gratitude and pride. It’s a great feeling to see how a small idea can grow into something big.
It all started with my own need for a Utility Sink. But my curiosity led me to set up an online business, which I initially ran part-time for years. I taught myself everything I knew about e-commerce. Ten years ago, KUNe was essentially a self-built webshop with five products. During my part-time time, KUNe developed step by step and grew steadily. When KUNe finally became my main job, I professionalized the company considerably: new suppliers, new products, a completely new webshop, the development of resellers and platforms. A small side project turned into a real company that can now proudly look back on its history and development.
Clearly, one of the biggest tasks was the continuous development of expertise and finding the right employees, agencies and service providers. And then, of course, the classic issues that all entrepreneurs are probably familiar with: Bureaucracy, supply chains, customs, logistics. All things that you don’t see directly, but which have a massive impact on everyday life and often cost more energy than you initially think.
Yes, one of them was certainly the step into full self-employment. I was very happy and successful in my job as an employee at the time, but at some point I reached my limits. Work, family and KUNe … it was no longer possible to juggle everything at the same time. It was clear: a decision had to be made.
Thursday, October 1, 2020, was finally my first day as a completely self-employed entrepreneur. No commute to the office, no appointments in the morning, suddenly I had more time again. I still remember my first “day off” very well. After breakfast, my wife took our daughter to nursery and I went for a walk with our then two-year-old son. There was a small pond near us that we walked around. On the way, we met people who were in a hurry, but we were in no rush. The sun was slowly rising, a light mist hovered over the water and my son walked the whole way hand in hand with me. At that moment, I felt a deep calm, an unexpected freedom and the exciting feeling: “Now something new begins.”
Professionally, I am still proud that I found the right employees, suppliers and service providers after a long search. These decisions have made KUNe what it is today and form the foundation for our success.
I want to continue to shape KUNe into a brand that stands for quality, reliability and passion internationally. My goal for 2035 is to position KUNe as an established European company with a clearly focused yet diverse range, stable supply chains, strong partners and perhaps even more in-house product development. Personally, I would like to gradually hand over operational responsibility so that I can concentrate fully on development, strategy and new ideas. This will allow me to shape and develop KUNe not only today, but also in the future.
Quite simply, it’s the joy of making things better and learning something new every day. Developing products, making processes more efficient and making customers happy still gives me real pleasure. In addition, I see every day what I or we have built up over these ten years. That motivates me again and again and gives me strength for everything that lies ahead.
We are continuously expanding our product range to offer our customers even more choice and quality. Specifically, the first quarter of 2026 will see the launch of a new Utility Sink Type, which is already in production and with which we are once again taking a step towards innovation. At the same time, we are working on several accessories and optimizations that we will gradually introduce. In this way, we want to ensure that every new product and every improvement offers real added value. Our aim is not only to develop functional and high-quality products, but also to make the daily use of our Utility Sinks even easier and more pleasant.
Yes, that’s definitely my wife Kerstin. She supports me on so many levels: on the one hand actively in all matters relating to KUNe, and on the other with understanding, patience and support, especially when things get stressful. Without her support, her trust and her strength, none of this would ever have been possible in this form. She is not only an important part of my everyday life, but also a crucial part of KUNe’s success.
