Water is a valuable commodity. In times of climate change, with rising temperatures, it is becoming more precious every year. In this blog post, you can find out how we can save water in our everyday lives and how your KUNe sink can contribute to this.
Climate change favors periods of drought
The rising temperatures that have been recorded worldwide in recent years mean that longer periods of drought are becoming more frequent in the Alpine region. According to a studyconducted by the ZAMG The reasons for this are a decrease in precipitation on the one hand and unusually high temperatures in the summer months on the other. Although Austria, for example, is considered a water-rich country, the effects of rising temperatures are also being felt here. In particular, groundwater reserves, which are used to treat drinking water, are affected by a decline due to the climatic changes. Despite the forecasts, more and more water is being consumed. The reason for this also lies in the cause: due to more drought, farmers have to irrigate more fields, for example. But it is not only the drought that is to blame for increased water consumption; our personal use of this important resource is also leading to an increase in consumption. In the next section of this blog post, we take a closer look at the purposes for which water is used.
Rising water consumption in Austria
In addition to the necessary use of water – for example to irrigate agricultural land – a lot of water is also consumed in the private sector. In Austria, for example, daily per capita water consumption is as much as 130 liters!
And this is roughly how the daily water consumption of 130 liters is made up:
- Showering and bathing: 22 percent
- Toilet flushing: 25 percent
- Laundry: 10 percent
- Dishwashing: 2 percent
- Outdoor area (pool, plants, etc.): 14 percent
- Taps in bathroom, WC, kitchen, laundry room: 27 percent
According to experts, there is potential to save 40 percent of our daily water consumption. So there is still plenty of room for improvement!
